Expansion of Central Health Center to increase access for community

On December 23, Providence Community Health Centers was thrilled to deliver a wonderful holiday gift to the neighborhood served by our Central Health Center – a groundbreaking ceremony that will allow us to care for an additional 4,000 patients annually.

The expansion, which will include 10 new exam rooms and will necessitate the hiring of three new providers, is expected to be completed by late July 2025.
Board members, project partners, and PCHC staff were all present at the ceremony as Senator Jack Reed, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, Peter Marino, CEO of Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, Merrill Thomas, PCHC President & CEO, and Chanita Hall, Central Health Center Director, spoke of the impact the expansion will have on patient care in Providence.

Other additions included in the expansion will be a patient waiting room, lab testing space, a medication room, and more. Our Central Health Center is located at 239 Cranston St. in Providence. A rendering of the Central Health Center expansion is pictured on this page.

The expansion is financed in part through federal funding secured by Sen. Reed. PCHC also acknowledged Neighborhood’s support and partnership to make the expansion a reality.

Despite the challenges facing community health centers, PCHC has chosen to strategically grow to meet the needs of our patients. In August 2024, PCHC opened a new $2.5 million adult dental clinic, which includes nine operatories, an on-site laboratory, and x-ray capabilities to help address the critical shortage of dental care for underserved patients, most of whom are adults insured through Medicaid.
